Okeny the Greedy Boy
Okeny the Greedy Boy
Recorded in Pader District, situated in Northern Uganda's cultural region known as Acoliland, this story takes place among the Acoli people who speak the Lëb Acoli language. Acoliland consists of eight districts, namely Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, Lamwo, Agago, Nwoya, Omoro, and Amuru.
The Acoli people strongly value sharing and condemn greed and selfishness. Their elders tell numerous stories that discourage people from being selfish or greedy, as those who refuse to share are viewed negatively in their society and may even face severe consequences. This cultural norm ensures that children grow up with a mindset of sharing and considering others.
Okeny, an only child who is used to having everything to himself due to his parents' love, gets upset when his mother shares his grasshoppers with his cousins. He runs away from home in anger. He must discover the value of sharing with others.
