Cock and Eagle
Cock and Eagle
The story tells of Eagle and Cock, who used to live together in harmony. However, one day, Cock tricked Eagle, causing the latter to become very angry. As a result, Eagle sought revenge, and their friendship was destroyed. The tale is used to explain why eagles are known to snatch chicks.
The story of Eagle and Cock comes from Acholiland, a cultural region in Northern Uganda, specifically recorded in the Gulu District. The Acholi people, who live in this region and speak the Acholi language, keep chickens in their homes. Eagles are a significant threat to the chicks, and the hens try to protect them by hiding them under their wings. Roosters crow to scare away the eagles. The folktale is traditionally told to children to explain why eagles hunt for chicks, and to encourage them to protect the chicks from eagles.
